Vocational schools train you for a specialized trade; now these high schools specialized in a focus subject are popping up. Science Leadership Academy, Constitution High School, and School of the Future etc. Theses high school primary focuses on the subject but the other subjects are taught such as math, reading, and language and other subjects needed t graduate. Working with partnerships to help get funding for the curriculum which helps prepare the students fir better knowledge of the primary subject the school focused on. Are these schools are only focusing on the focus subjects and other subjects aren’t thought to be as important?
Constitution High School opened three years ago with history as its primary focus, and three founding principles, active citizenships, democracy, and knowledge of history”. Now open the school has three grades 11th, 10th, 9th. Nhd (national history day”0the yearly project that leaves many students stressed out, and lacking behind in other classes. The students at Constitution High school such as Rodessha Thomas (10th) believes yes, the school does put history before everything else such as science and math classes. English teacher Mr. Romero disagrees and believes that everyone basically knew what he or she were signing up for when they came to Constitution high school. He actually doesn’t mind when his students have to leave his class for history related reasons. He basically knows that this is a history school so there would be a lot of history related things. So basically we all knew what w were getting into too.
The history curriculum is unique and made up by history teachers with the help from partners such as Gilder Lehrnman , National Constitution Center etc. but the other subjects are taught by guidelines given by the School Discirt of Philadelphia. Although some flexibility is given not as much as the subjects of that focus school. With this in mind biology teacher Karen Thomas believes everyone subject is equally important and because of standerilized test such as SAT’s, PSSA that each subject must be considered the same, but she understands we are a history school and understanding the curriculum for history.
To get some more students opinons I asked 10th graders Brittany Chapman, Taneah, Brittany D., and Ayanna on how they felt about Constituion high school and how history is being taught. The answers ere pretty much the same. Three of them belived that Constitution High school does sometimes go over board with history like putting it before other subjects. But Brittany Davis who is on the Debate Team belives Constitution High school does a goood job balanced evrythning.
